Include a catch all option to survey questions

Posted on 4/1/2009 by Jim in category: survey software tips
Do not assume that a survey question applies to all respondents. Always include a catch all option such as “Other”, “Not applicable”, or “Don’t know”.

Including such an option is especially important if the survey question requires the respondent to provide an answer. If you require an answer to a question without allowing a catch all option, respondents who cannot offer a meaningful answer will tend to provide random answers, increasing noise in the data and lowering the overall quality of the conclusions derived from the survey.

Remember that you will always get no more than what you ask for... Happy Surveying!
